Child Protection Worker - WPG
The Child Protection Worker is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of children and families in Manitoba by providing protective services, support, and interventions. This position involves working with families, children, and community organizations to assess risks, provide services, and collaborate with other professionals to support families in crisis.
Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
Conduct thorough investigations in response to reports of child abuse, neglect, and domestic violence.
Assess risks and determine the safety of children within their home environment.
Develop safety plans, including short-term interventions and long-term solutions, to ensure the child’s well-being.
Collect and document information to support decisions about child protection cases.
Develop and implement case plans tailored to the needs of the child and family.
Monitor the progress of cases, ensure compliance with safety plans, and conduct regular follow-up visits.
Coordinate services with community organizations, therapists, medical professionals, and schools.
Ensure all legal documentation and case records are complete, accurate, and submitted in a timely manner.
Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and counseling services to children and families.
Assist families in accessing community resources and services such as housing, childcare, and financial support.
Advocate for the child’s needs within the family and broader service systems.
Empower families to improve their circumstances and ensure the safety of their children.
Work collaboratively with other professionals (e.g., social workers, psychologists, law enforcement, medical providers) to provide holistic care.
Participate in regular case meetings, conferences, and court proceedings as needed.
Participate in community outreach and education on child protection issues.
Ensure compliance with Manitoba’s child protection laws, policies, and regulations.
Prepare and present evidence in court hearings, including testifying about case findings and recommendations.
Maintain strict confidentiality regarding case details, in accordance with legislation and agency policies.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and understanding when working with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
Work closely with Indigenous communities to ensure cultural safety and support the inclusion of traditional practices in service delivery.
Other duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Work (BSW), or a related field (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, or Child and Youth Care).
Registration with the Manitoba College of Social Workers (MCSW) is preferred.
A minimum of 2 years of experience in child welfare, child protection, or social services.
Experience working with families in crisis, child abuse investigations, and providing interventions is an asset.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
Ability to manage complex cases with multiple service providers.
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including report writing and documentation.
Knowledge of child development, child protection laws, and community resources in Manitoba.
Ability to remain calm and make decisions under pressure.
Cultural awareness and the ability to work with diverse populations.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Compassionate, empathetic, and patient when working with vulnerable populations.
Strong ethical principles and commitment to child welfare.
Ability to maintain professional boundaries while building trusting relationships with families.
Resilience and adaptability in challenging situations.
Other Requirements:
A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
Willingness to undergo a Criminal Record and Child Abuse Registry check.
Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and on-call shifts as required.
Work Site Location
The location of the position is to be determined.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The role may require traveling to rural or remote locations.
Emotional resilience is essential due to the nature of the work, which can involve challenging and distressing situations.
The workload can fluctuate and may require responding to urgent situations, including emergency child protection cases.
