Family Support Worker (Prevention) - WWHO/WPG

The Family Support Worker is responsible for assisting with the development and implementation of a wide range of goal-oriented interventions to children and/or their families. The Family Support Worker is responsible to mentor parenting strategies, establish in coordination with parents household routines, and attach families to community support services, overall to strengthen families.

Duties:

  • Observe and assess family needs and parent/child interaction in a variety of settings

  • Consult with Family Service Worker and collaterals to review goals and plans

  • Provide support and counseling for families in crisis and maintain a caring relationshipwith high needs children and their parents

  • Assist Family Service Workers with emergency responses to children in care/families as required

  • Prepares written assessments from observing visits and forwards to Family Service Workers for file documention

  • Teach a variety of skills to parents incorporating educational and supportive elements eg. Life skills, household management and organization, including nutrition and budget planning, shopping, child care, infant stimulation

  • Advocate and liaise for families with resources e.g. welfare, housing, daycare

  • Accompany parents and children to specified appointments and support and mentor family times

  • Record observations and complete regular contact notes on a weekly basis

  • Document all data with respect to assigned families

  • Attend meetings, e.g. unit, staff, etc.

  • Engage in attachment training and supports to families

  • Provide administrative support to staff when required

  • Works as a part of the Waywayseecappo Child and Family Services delivery team

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Post Secondary Certificate in Social Services

  • Minimum grade twelve diploma

  • Preferred, two (2) years experience directly in the social services/child care profession

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, written and organizational skills

  • Non-violent crisis intervention and current CPR or Emergency First Aid

  • Respect for, sensitivity towards as well as knowledge and understanding of Ojibwe culture, traditions and the Seven Grandfather Teachings

  • Must be available to work flexible hours, when required.

    Basic knowledge of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act

  • Must have demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and within a multi-disciplinary approach

  • Must have a good working knowledge and appreciation of First Nations traditions and culture

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Must have excellent interpersonal, assessment, and organizational skills

  • Must be able to respond to completing deadlines in a fast paced work environment

  • Must have computer training and/or knowledge of Microsoft Office

  • The ability to speak Ojibway will be considered a definite asset.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing and able to travel

  • Must have access to reliable transportation

  • Must be able to work flexible hours

  • Must complete a criminal record, child abuse registry and prior contact check

  • Must be willing to attend court when necessary

  • Must be willing to attend further training/self development

  • Must possess excellent documentation-note taking and typed case note experience
